Apa Itu Adverb?

Sebelum menyelami topik adverb clause, mari segarkan ingatan kita tentang adverb.

Adverb merupakan kata yang disematkan untuk menambahkan informasi terkait verb, adjective, atau adverb lain dalam kalimat.

Fungsinya adalah untuk menjawab lima informasi utama yang sering diperlukan dalam kalimat, yaitu kapan (when), di mana (where), mengapa (why), bagaimana (how), sejauh apa / kondisi (to what extent / condition).

Misalnya:

• “Please stand there for the photos.” → Menjelaskan ‘when’
• “I broke up with him because he cheated.” → Menjelaskan ‘why’

Apa itu Adverb Clause?

Apabila adverb terdiri dari satu kata, maka adverb clause merupakan sekelompok kata (klausa) yang berfungsi seperti adverb. Klausa ini memiliki susunan yang lebih kompleks, karena memiliki frasa lengkap dengan subject dan verb, dan didahului dengan subordinating conjuction.

Secara garis besar, berikut rumus atau pola utama adverb clause:

1. (Subordinating Conjunction + Subject + Verb) + Independent Clause Contoh: “When the clock struck thirteen, no one knew what to do.” 2. Independent Clause + (Subordinating Conjunction + Subject + Verb) Contoh: “No one knew what to do when the clock struck thirteen.“

Berikut adalah contoh lain penggunaan adverb clause:

IC = Independent Clause

SC = Subordinating Conjunction

AC = Adverb Clause 

• While the village slept under the red moon, the travelers prepared to leave.”

• “Wherever Luna hung her paintings, a crowd seemed to gather.”

• “Zahra danced, as if her feet were on fire and the music was endless.“

Jenis Adverb Clause

Adverb clause memiliki beberapa jenis, bergantung pada informasi yang diberikan. Berikut penjelasan mengenai jenis-jenis adverb clause, subordinating conjunction, dan contohnya:

1. Adverb Clause of Time (Time Clauses)

Klausa waktu memberikan informasi mengenai kapan (when) suatu kejadian terjadi. Subordinating conjunction-nya adalah:

Whenever	After	When	Until
By the time	Since	Once	By the time
Before	While

Contoh:

• “After Marisol had finished her sculpture, she stood back to admire it”

• “Ryo immediately felt a sense of peace as the lanterns floated away into the sky.”

2. Cause/ Reason Clauses

Klausa ini menjelaskan mengapa (why) sesuatu terjadi. Subordinating conjunction-nya adalah:

Since	As	In order that

Contoh:

• “As Nina refused to take the hint, the situation became awkward.”

• “The bridge collapsed because the supports had rusted beyond repair.“

3. Condition Clauses

Klausa ini menggambarkan kondisi seperti apa suatu kejadian dapat terjadi. Subordinating conjunction-nya adalah:

If	In case	Even if	Assuming that
Unless	As long as	Provided that	On condition that

Contoh:

• “If the stars align tomorrow night, we might see the comet.”

• “The garden will thrive as long as the soil remains fertile and moist.”

4. Contrast Clauses

Klausa ini menunjukkan perbedaan atau pertentangan dengan ide utama. Subordinating conjunction-nya adalah:

Although	While	Even if	Even though
Though	Whereas

Contoh:

• “Rehan hesitated to jump in even though the river seemed calm.”

• “Though Evan prepared thoroughly for the speech, his nerves got the better of him.”

5. Adverb Clause of Manner

Klausa ini menjelaskan bagaimana (how) sesuatu terjadi. Klausa ini menggunakan conjunction:

• “Alex argued as if he had memorized every law in the book.”

• “Idris cleaned the tools, as though they were made of gold.”

6. Adverb Clause of Purpose

Klausa ini menunjukkan alasan atau tujuan dari suatu tindakan. Klausa ini menggunakan:

In order that

For the purpose that

Contoh:

• “I adjusted the telescope, in order that the stars appeared clearer.”

• “Mia rehearsed her lines so that her performance would be flawless.”

7. Adverb Clause of Place

Terakhir, klausa ini memberikan informasi mengenai di mana suatu kejadian terjadi. Klausa ini menggunakan:

Wherever

Contoh:

• “Clara placed the camera where it would catch the timelapse of the Milky Way perfectly.”

• “The birds build their nest where the branches are thickest.”
